Growing truffle market despite climate change

There is no doubt that truffles play an important role in Made in Italy. A sector that fascinates the whole world with a value ranging from 5 to 6 billion euros per year. Financecommunity interviewed Giammarco Urbani, Managing Director of Urbani Tartufi, one of the leading Italian companies known worldwide with 170 years of history.

During the interview, the CEO stressed that the export and the opening to new markets is a central aspect for the whole supply chain, but also stressed how much the world of truffles is linked to the unexpected of seasonality. And with the climate change underway, made of drought and high summer temperatures, it is easy to come across seasons not quite as good as the one just passed for the white truffle, distorted season that was prolonged until January with consequent uncertainty on demand.

Despite the problems related to the climate, the CEO stressed that the sector continues to record consolidated growth at the beginning of 2023 with an increase of 20% over the previous year, especially in emerging markets where demand is growing and the contamination of different cultures is bringing truffles into the kitchens of international chefs.

But what can be the remedies to face the future?

According to the CEO, in addition to the mechanisms of industrial preservation and preserved products, useful for extending the seasonality, it will be necessary to think about the future of this raw material and what to do to continue to ensure its availability. In this regard, according to Gianmarco Urbani it is necessary to focus on the birth of new truffle cultivations, thus ensuring an increase in the natural productivity of the truffle through truffles planted in the territory.
